You Don't Need an Expensive ANPR Camera
A dedicated commercial ANPR camera costs $3,000–$10,000+ per camera. Use any standard IP camera with our cloud-based license plate recognition API and get the same results at a fraction of the cost.
The Problem with Traditional ANPR Cameras
Most businesses overpay for dedicated ANPR hardware when a smarter, more cost-effective solution already exists.
Inflated Hardware Prices
Dedicated ANPR cameras bundle basic IP camera hardware with proprietary firmware and charge $2,000-$15,000 10–30x more $100than equivalent IP cameras. You're paying for a brand name, not better technology.
Locked Into Outdated Technology
Proprietary ANPR systems use closed ecosystems. When the vendor discontinues support or raises prices, you're stuck. Cloud APIs update automatically with no hardware changes required.
Poor GCC License Plate Support
Many traditional ANPR vendors focus on Western markets. UAE, Saudi, Qatar, and other GCC license plates are an afterthought - leading to lower accuracy and missed reads.
Vendor Lock-In & Recurring Costs
Traditional ANPR systems require expensive annual license renewals, proprietary software, and certified installers. Switching vendors means replacing all your hardware.
How the Alternative Works
Replace expensive ANPR cameras with any IP camera and our cloud API in 4 simple steps.
Install Any IP Camera
Mount any standard IP camera with adequate resolution (2MP+) at your entry/exit point. Budget cameras from $30 work perfectly for most scenarios.
Connect to Our API
Send camera frames to our ANPR.software API via a simple REST call. Works with any programming language, any operating system, any hardware.
Get License Plate Data
Our AI returns the license plate number, confidence score, country, and region in milliseconds. Supports all GCC formats including UAE, Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.
Integrate with Your System
Use the API response to trigger barriers, log vehicles, send alerts, or feed your parking management system. Full control, no vendor lock-in.
Real Cost Comparison
Three ways to buy the same result over three years, computed from published hardware prices and our own rates.
When to stop paying per plate
Per-plate billing never stops, so given enough traffic anything metered loses to hardware bought once — above roughly 38,500 reads per camera per month, a dedicated camera would out-last our cloud API on cost. That is why ANPR Edge licenses exist: one payment per location, $2,500 for up to 4 cameras or $6,500 for unlimited cameras, nothing per read and no per-camera license. Past about 36,000 reads a month even the unlimited license is the cheaper way to buy. From the first camera it also costs less than dedicated ANPR hardware over three years.
Where a license is the wrong answer
- At a single camera with light traffic, the cheapest of our options is not a license at all. The 4-camera license already costs less than dedicated hardware over three years — about $5,438 with the IP camera, PC and updates, against $7,950 for one ANPR camera and its recorder — but Edge Free costs less again: it runs one camera and reads its plates in our cloud from your wallet, on a plan from $15 a month.
- Edge needs one Windows or macOS machine per location — 32GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, 8 to 12 cores, an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 9 — and it is in the totals above. It does the recording that a dedicated camera needs an NVR for, so it replaces a box rather than adding one, but it is still a machine you have to own, patch and keep running.
- A license includes 3 months of updates. After that they are optional, at $1,170 a year for an unlimited license or $450 for a 4-camera one. The totals above pay for them in every remaining year, so the comparison is not flattered by software that stopped being updated.
- Consumer LPR cameras exist around $770. If you need exactly one lane and no barrier logic, lists or integrations, that is cheaper than either of our options and we would rather you knew.

What these numbers assume
- Dedicated commercial ANPR camera at $4,000, the mid-point of the published range.
- Installation at $1,200 per camera.
- Annual maintenance at 20% of the original hardware price, the published industry figure.
- Our side: $200 per IP camera plus $500 to install — no barrier or controller to wire.
- Two reads per vehicle, one in and one out, 30 days a month. The API rate is $0.005 per plate processed, the same on every plan; the plan subscription itself is not in the total.
- Dedicated ANPR cameras record to an NVR, so one is in their column: $350 up to eight cameras, $1,290 above that, both from published listings.
- The on-premise column carries the PC Edge runs on, at $1,000 — the top of the range for the published spec, and the class of machine we measured running 16 cameras in Parked cars mode. Above 16 cameras it adds $1,000 for every further 16, standing in for a bigger PC; the license does not change. The PC stands in for the NVR rather than adding to it.
- The cloud column stores reads, not footage. A site that must retain video would add a recorder there too.
Cameras that will do
Not one of these is an ANPR camera. They are ordinary IP cameras that see a plate clearly enough, and the reading happens in our software — which makes the camera the part of the bill you get to shrink.

Camera Installation Tips for Best ANPR Results
- Mount the camera at a 15–30° angle to the license plate, not straight-on or at steep angles.
- Ensure the license plate covers at least 20% of the frame width for reliable reads.
- Use IR-equipped cameras for 24/7 operation - essential for nighttime reads in parking facilities.
- Position cameras 2–4 meters from where vehicles stop for best focus and capture consistency.
ANPR Edge is the part that does the work
Install it on one Windows or macOS machine on the same network as the cameras. It reads every camera at the location, drives the barriers, and with an ANPR Edge license it holds the plate and vehicle models locally — so plates are read on your own hardware and nothing is metered.
One payment per location: $2,500 for up to 4 cameras, $6,500 for unlimited cameras. All six GCC countries included, no per-camera license, nothing per read.
One license per location covers every camera there: up to 4 cameras on the smaller license, unlimited cameras on the other. How many cameras one PC runs depends on its hardware. We measured 16 cameras on a Core i7 desktop in Parked cars mode, and past that you upgrade the PC, not the license.
Vehicle make, model, body type and colour are included in both licenses, for every country.
Both are licenses for the Windows or macOS Edge PC. Running the engine in Docker on your own server or cloud is priced differently, per deployment — ask us.
What you get with it
- A workflow builder — triggers, lists and notifications, wired to whatever the site needs
- Integrations out of the box: Google Sheets, Telegram, email and plain HTTP requests
- Vehicle detection and counting, not just plates
- Entry and exit direction, so you know which way a vehicle went through
- Camera discovery, areas and placement — it finds the cameras on the network
- Full history with CSV export, and support
The workflow builder is added to on customer request. If your site needs a trigger or an integration that is not in there yet, that is a conversation rather than a no.
Read how on-premise worksFrequently Asked Questions
Will a regular IP camera really work for license plate recognition?
Yes. Our AI model is trained to handle varying image quality, lighting conditions, and angles. A 2MP IP camera positioned correctly will achieve 95%+ accuracy. Higher resolution cameras (4MP+) consistently achieve 99%+ accuracy for GCC plates.
What are the minimum camera requirements?
Minimum: 2MP (1080p) resolution, 15+ FPS, IR night vision for 24/7 use. Recommended: 4MP+, 25+ FPS, motorized varifocal lens for flexible mounting. The camera should capture clear, readable license plate images - our API handles the rest.
How does accuracy compare to dedicated ANPR cameras?
Nobody has published a fair head-to-head test, so we will not claim our reads match a dedicated ANPR camera. What we can say is that the specification which decides whether a plate is readable at all - shutter speed - is the same on both: Hikvision lists 1/100,000s on its ordinary AcuSense models and on its dedicated ANPR models alike. Position the camera at a choke point, set the exposure manually, and our models are trained specifically on GCC plates rather than adapted from Western ones.
What about latency? Is cloud processing fast enough?
The cloud API takes 900 ms to 1.5 s, including the network - fine for logging and for a barrier a driver is already slowing down for. Where you need it faster, ANPR Edge reads on a PC at the site in 50-100 ms and drives the barrier over your own network.
Can I use existing cameras I already have installed?
In many cases, yes. If your existing cameras meet the minimum resolution requirements and are positioned to capture license plates clearly, you can connect them to our API immediately. We offer a free test tool to check your camera's compatibility.
How does pricing work compared to buying ANPR cameras?
Instead of a large upfront hardware cost, you pay a monthly plan from $15 that includes credits, spent at one credit per plate processed. This converts a capital expense into a predictable operating expense. $2,000-$15,000 At the read volumes most sites run, the three-year total (cameras + API) comes to roughly half what dedicated ANPR hardware costs. That advantage narrows as volume rises — the cost comparison above shows the point where dedicated hardware becomes the cheaper option. $50-$200 We offer a free tier for testing and low-volume use cases.
