Switch the computer on remotely (Wake on LAN)
What it does
Wake on LAN lets support switch this computer on over the network instead of asking somebody to walk to it. It is optional — everything else works without it — but it saves a site visit when a computer has been shut down.

Switch it on in the start-up settings
Waking a computer that is switched off is handled by the start-up settings, not Windows. On many HP and Lenovo business computers the installer does this for you.
- 1Restart and open the start-up settings (usually F10 on HP, F1 or F2 on Lenovo, F2 on Dell).
- 2Find "S4/S5 Wake on LAN" or "Wake on LAN" — usually under Power, Power Management or Advanced.
- 3Set it to Enabled.
- 4On HP computers, if there is a "Wake on LAN Power-On Password Policy" set to require a password, ask your IT team whether it can be relaxed — otherwise the computer wakes to a password prompt.
- 5Save and exit.
Check the network adapter too
- 1Right-click Start and open Device Manager › Network adapters.
- 2Open the wired (Ethernet) adapter and go to the Power Management tab. Tick "Allow this device to wake the computer".
- 3On the Advanced tab, set "Wake on Magic Packet" to Enabled. If there is a "WOL & Shutdown Link Speed" option, set it to "Not Speed Down".
Ticking the Windows option alone is not enough to wake a computer that is fully off — the start-up setting has to be on as well.
Check it worked
- The row reads On.
- Ask support to test it: shut the computer down normally, then they send the wake signal and it should start.
Turning it off
Set the same start-up option to Disabled. On HP computers you can also untick the row in the app.
