Stop the power button sending the computer to sleep

What it does

Out of the box, one press of the power button — or of Sleep in the Start menu — quietly puts the whole car park to sleep. The installer makes the physical button do nothing and the Start menu button shut down properly, so the computer can only be stopped on purpose.

In the app: The power button cannot send it to sleep

The quickest way

In ANPR Edge, go to Support, press "How this computer is set up" and tick this row. The steps below do the same by hand.

Change it by hand

  1. 1Open Control Panel › Hardware and Sound › Power Options.
  2. 2Choose "Choose what the power buttons do" on the left.
  3. 3Under "Plugged in", set "When I press the power button" to "Do nothing". If there is a sleep button, set it to "Do nothing" as well.
  4. 4Press "Change settings that are currently unavailable" if the options are greyed out, then save.

Shut down from the Start menu still works and is the right way to stop the computer — it leaves a record in Windows of who did it.

If Windows will not let you change it

Some computers handle the power button in their start-up settings rather than in Windows, so the option is missing. In that case:

  1. 1Look in the start-up settings (see the power-cut guide for how to get there) for a power button option and set it to off or disabled, if your model has one.
  2. 2Otherwise, protect the button itself: place the computer where it cannot be knocked, or fit a power-button cover.
  3. 3Label the computer "Car park system — do not switch off".

Check it worked

  • The row reads On. It only does when the physical button does nothing and the Start menu button shuts down.

Turning it off

Untick the row in the app (this puts the Start menu button back to Sleep), or change the options in Power Options.
